March 2012
The month of the Rabbit March 5- April 4

This month we enter the second of the water wood combination months of the year. We are experiencing the manifestation of the Yang Water in the heavenly Stems of the Year and the Month Pillar with the floods in much of Eastern Australia. I've chosen to explore the water theme and element in its physical as well as its metaphysical implications this month.
When we see so much water currently, and in the recent past such as floods and the Tsunamis etc, what does this mean energetically for the unfoldment of the collective and personal consciousness. The physical universe is always a reflection of the energetic universe and vice versa. Also it's like if we have a dream of flood or drowning, then examine what does this image represent. Water is also fundamental element of the Chinese 5 element system as well as the Western Four element astrological paradigm.
In Chinese Philosophy, the placement of the water element is at the bottom of the 5 element diagrammatic representation of both the archetypal / ancestral and applied sequence. The nature of water is to go down into the depths or what the Chinese call the 'abyss'. This can be the physical abyss but also the psychological abyss or internal depths.
From the I Ching: 'Water descends from a higher elevation to a lower one- thus it implies the abysmal, lowness, the underground, low-lying. The nature of water is to flow and descend into deep dark places, hence the abysmal'. Wilhelm, Richard. (1989) I Ching or Book of Changes. Arkana. England
Water also has associations to the night time. The colour of water is black like the darkest part of the night. This is represented by the placement of the water trigram at the bottom of the Later Heaven Sequence. The trigram therefore can relate to poverty, want, worries, illness, difficulties, trouble, danger, toil and floods as indicated by the I Ching. But mystically this relates to the challenges of going into the depths of the psyche and negotiating and meeting its challenges, which is a theme very prevalent in our world at the moment and I believe will continue and intensify due to the dramatic, challenging, and crisis like situations many people in many countries are facing.
I am sometimes asked when will things get better?. My answer is it's up to us to make things better. The astrological indicator of the Planet Pluto, with its Water association demands living our lives from our own internal highest authority (the 'Emperor' and the 'Hierophant' in the Tarot).
That why many people now are standing up to authority and questioning its relevance, integrity and validity, such as the revolutionary discontent in many countries such as Russia and Syria.
People are finding it is no longer appropriate to submit oneself to a repressive higher authority. The challenge of this theme is the challenge to live from ones higher authority and autonomy, which is why I believe there are so many closures and cut backs in factories with people losing their jobs. This is a prominent Age of 8 theme.
Often if not, always, external challenges and crises stimulate this kind of orientation and focus. The water element demands internal exploration and growth, being plunged into our psychological depths and dealing with our 'issues' of you will. The nature of a crisis or difficulty of course has this as the undercurrent.
Water is the element often associated in Feng Shi and Chinese Astrology as an 'academic' influence with certain combinations in the Flying Star Chart associated with academic advancement etc. Water is, and has the potential to be knowledgeable and deeply philosophical. It compulsion to go down, internal, deep, is associated with interior exploration, and the urge to go into the depths of the Psyche.
In his yearly newsletter Raymond Lo made mention that many of his students are Water self element signs. No surprise here as water to has that detective, problem solving quality, that both Feng Shui and Astrology both require. Also Water is the 'money' element for the Earth element. As Earth correlates with Feng Shui it is not unusual to find many people who study Feng Shui being self element water or having this element strong inside their Four Pillars.
Water also relates to the back, and the Mountain, the Black Tortoise, the ancestral energy, but we can expand on this another time, perhaps as we come into the water months of the year.
The water elements rules the ears, therefore governs our ability to hear. But not just the audible sound. It also governs the ability to hear the non audible, the transcendent, the sacred whisperings, the messages from depths of consciousness.
Are we hearing the messages and heeding the signals.
The current prevalence of water correlates to the planetary astrological transit of Chiron and particularly Neptune in Pisces. Neptune the planet of the mystical is transiting Pisces, the sign of the mystical, for the next 14 years. It will complete its transit in approximately 2025, when we begin the Age of 9. The implications of this transits hold great relevance and meaning for the current Age, its meaning and potentialities and we will explore this in depth in a later newsletter.
As an aside the 'Water' element of Chinese Astrology is quite different to the 'Water' element of Western astrology. The same can be said for the Fire element. Earth however is much more strongly correlated.
A note on the Gillard - Rudd fiasco.
Without going into the astrological complexities of the individual charts it was evident that the momentum was with Gillard. What I would like to address is the issue of the astrological association of a leader with the fortune of the country. In astrological analysis the chart of the leader can be examined in 2 (perhaps more) ways. The chart can be an indicator of what the person will bring to the country and its potential fortune. Secondly the chart of the leader is a reflection of what the country will go through, as the chart of the leader is representative of this. It is sometimes said that "you get the leader you deserve". I feel this latter statement is an accurate indication of the process. Without going into specifics, Gillard's 10 year Luck Cycle is quite favorable, however the years being more challenging. This indicates that the fortune of our country, all things considered is more positive than negative. Of course it depends upon how she plays this as well. Rudd's chart does not indicate this, nor does Abbott. Turnbull is also in a more favorable Luck cycle. The potential of the countries fortunes can be assessed by the chart of the leader, as can the fortune of a company, corporations, business, football team etc by the CEO or director.
This month as well as Mars being retrograde, mercury also turns retrograde. Both planets inherently have a forward impulse and in a month where both are retrograding it is a time for steady progress. It is not a time to push forward with projects. In fact you may find you are already being held up or there are obstacles and frustrations. Prepare for more.
I explored this issue in the December newsletter but for those who missed it I've reprinted parts of it.
Delays, missed communications, misunderstandings, loss of key, computer malfunctions are typical of the way mercury retrograde may manifest. Others are lost letters, messages etc. It is wise to proceed cautiously at these times and accept delays if they occur. It is not wise to proceed quickly or try to force and outcome as the energy is going in reverse. This could cause more problems.
It is a time re - think, re-design projects or areas of our lives. Then we can identify areas that may not be working and release them. Anything with the prefix re- is worth implementing at this time. Re - define, re - work, re - consider, re - evaluate, re - examine, re- emerge, re - do, re - member (to pay bills), re- search, re- move, re- invent etc. These are all worthwhile strategies during this time.
Next month, April, we move into the Month of the Dragon, which is an 'Earth' element month. So the dynamic of elements shifts from water and wood to Earth. Then this momentum continues, increasing as the earth element is strengthened by the fire months of the year. It is quite a dramatic elemental shift which we will look at next month. In April we will really feel the potentialities of the Year of the Dragon and its themes come forth.
Unfortunately my newsletter will be more sporadic in the future; I may not be able to produce it monthly. My thanks to those who offer feedback and support.
My best wishes to you all
Till next month
